Roncesvalles
ST SU 1 Night

Easy Option: If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you can split the long stage from St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles into two stages of 12 km and 13 km. This option includes an overnight stay in a charming 2-star hotel in the village of Valcarlos. We recommend taking this route during the winter months when snow can make the higher route impassable. The "Valcarlos Route" mainly follows the roadside as it passes through the valleys of the Nive and Valcarlos rivers. Once you reach Roncesvalles, be sure to visit the Collegiate Church. If you opt for the split-day option in Valcarlos, you will follow this route. It is also advisable to take this route if the weather conditions are bad. If the weather has been particularly poor before your holiday, it would be safer to follow the N135 to Roncesvalles.

The French Way, or Camino Francés, begins in St Jean Pied de Port in the French Basque Country. After spending the night in Saint Jean Pied de Port, your Camino journey starts. This is one of the most challenging yet beautiful parts of the route, especially if you take the 'Napoleon Route' over the Roncesvalles Pass (1450m). The 'Napoleon Route' starts with a steep climb past country houses, orchards, and Alpine meadows. It then leads through lovely beech woods before entering Spain and descending into Roncesvalles. The views of the Pyrenees from this route are spectacular and well worth the effort. The first day of this section is considered the most difficult of the entire French Way, as it crosses the Roncesvalles Pass on its way out of the Pyrenees. There are two routes to Roncesvalles, with the 'Napoleon Route' being the more scenic but challenging option. Roncesvalles ('Orreaga' in Basque) is a popular Camino starting point for Spanish pilgrims. Here, you should visit the St James chapel, as well as the Royal Collegiate Church of Saint Mary.

You will then descend towards the village of Zubiri and its medieval ‘Puente de la Rabia’ (the Rabies Bridge) over the River Arga.

After your night in Zubiri, the Camino de Santiago follows the river Arga to the town of Larrasoaña, an important stop for pilgrims in Medieval times. The second half of the day will get busier, as you approach the bustle of Pamplona city. Famous for its Running of the Bulls festival, San Fermín, taking place in July, Pamplona has many other attractions to visit. Explore the city’s medieval streets, visit the cathedral, taste some of the fantastic local food and wine and Hemingway fans can go for a coffee in one of the writer’s favourite haunts in the main square: Plaza del Castillo.

Pamplona is the capital city of Navarre, Spain, and the former Kingdom of Navarre. The city is located in central Navarre, in a rounded valley known as the Cuenca de Pamplona, which connects the mountainous north with the Ebro valley. It is 92 kilometres from the town of San Sebastián and 407 kilometres from the capital city of Madrid. The climate and landscape of the Cuenca de Pamplona represent a transition between these two main geographical regions of Navarre.

The historical centre of Pamplona is on the right bank of the Arga River, a tributary of the Ebro. The city has expanded on both sides of the river. Its climate is Oceanic with influences of Continental Mediterranean. The two most important museums in Pamplona are the Museo de Navarra, which focuses on the archaeological and artistic heritage of Navarre, and the Museo Diocesano of religious art, located in the cathedral.

Pamplona is the first Spanish city on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. The city is famous worldwide for the San Fermín festival, held from July 6 to 14, with the running of the bulls, or Encierro, being one of the main attractions. This fiesta, known as Sanfermines to the locals, was brought to widespread attention by Ernest Hemingway in his novel "The Sun Also Rises." The festival begins at noon on July 6 with the Chupinazo, a pyrotechnic event, and ends at midnight on July 14 with the singing of the Pobre de Mí.

While the Encierro is the most famous event, the week-long celebration includes many other traditional and folkloric events. Sanfermines is held in honour of Saint Fermin, the co-patron of Navarre, and has become one of the most internationally renowned festivals in Spain, attracting over 1,000,000 visitors. The Running of the Bulls involves participants running in front of a small group of bulls let loose on a sectioned-off course of the town's streets. Unlike bullfights, which are performed by professionals, anyone can participate in an Encierro. The purpose of the event is to transport the bulls from the off-site corrals where they spent the night to the bullring where they will be fought in the evening. Youngsters often jump among the bulls to show off their bravado.
